23. Traveling America
The Traveling America (TA) series begins with a motor trip I took from Virginia to New Mexico in 2005. The series reflects my experiences since that time while traveling the highways and byways of this fascinating country. The title of the work might lead you to think it consists of conventional travelogues. While I do offer some travelers’ advisories, the emphasis is on the people I met and on their cultures and outlooks on life. Nonetheless, I could not omit descriptions and pictures of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Here is a summary of the contents of Traveling America.
TA (I): Petersburg Civil War battlefield. Pinehurst golf country. Thomas Wolfe’s home. The Biltmore Estate. Quanah the Warrior, Quarter Horse country.
TA (II): Georgia O’Keefe country. The San Juan mountain range in Colorado. Green Valley, Utah. Nevada and water, or the lack thereof. A deer collision. Goat guests at a once famous hotel.
TA (III): Pennsylvania skiing, Looking back to the past: French-Canadian immigration.
TA (IV): Room service for dogs, A bar in West Virginia, The 1811 National Highway, The Zane Grey Museum, Mark Twain’s home.
TA (V): Columbia River, Mt. Hood, Bend and Weed Oregon, Mt. Shasta, Old Town Sacramento, Palm Springs.
TA (VI): Elvis travelers, Chicken and waffles in Hollywood, Catalina Island, Disneyland, Golf and helicopters in Hawaii.
TA (VII): Berkeley Pit in Butte Montana, Little Big Horn, Mount Rushmore.
TA (VIII): Grand-Kohs ranch, Old Montana prison, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Jackson Hole, San Juan Forest, Balloon festival in Albuquerque.
TA (IX): Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Blue highways in Nevada.
TA (X): Glacier National Park.
TA (XI): Pacific Coast Highways.
TA (XII): The Greenbrier Resort, Train ride from Greenbrier to D.C., Fredricksburg Civil War battlefield, Southern Pines.
TA (XIII): Joshua National Park, Mojave National Preserve.
TA (XIV): Going to the Sun Road.
TA (XV): The Big Island.
TA (XVI): The Great Plains Aquifer.
